What will happen during my children's dental appointment?

While a child's dental appointment will have many of the same aspects as an adult dental appointment, there are some significant differences. Today, our Vancouver dentists share what you can expect during your child's dental appointment.

Cleaning

During a typical dental appointment for your child, the dental hygienist or dentist will perform a thorough professional dental cleaning on the teeth. This procedure will look the same whether your child has primary or adult teeth.

Scaling is part of the cleaning and will be done to remove any tartar that has built up. A professional flossing and polishing will conclude the cleaning.

Check-up

The dentist will check your child's teeth, gums, jaw and inside the mouth for any problems such as tooth decay, oral abnormalities, misalignments of the teeth or jaw or gingivitis.

X-Rays

X-rays will sometimes be taken by the dentist or hygienist to help identify problems that may not be visible to the naked eye.

These X-rays will only be done when required. Their frequency will be determined by numerous factors such as your child's general oral health, stage of development and risk of dental disease.

Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral found in soil, water, and some foods. Fluoride is important for oral health and development because it strengthens tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. It can even reverse decay that has already begun to develop in some cases.

Getting enough fluoride is important for everyone, but especially for children because their teeth are still growing and developing.

During your child’s dental appointment, your dentist will discuss your child’s fluoride needs with you, and together you'll settle on a course of fluoride delivery. This may include in-office fluoride treatments, or fluoride products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

Tips & Techniques

The dentist or hygienist will end the appointment by reviewing proper at-home dental hygiene with you and your child (if your child is old enough to understand).

This will include tips and advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques, oral health-friendly dietary information, and much more.

They will also be happy to address any questions or concerns you have about your child’s oral health.

Follow-Up Appointment Scheduling

If your child has a cavity or other oral health problem, our administration team will book a follow-up appointment to monitor or treat it. You can book this appointment at our office, or call us any time.
